Commands Of The Lord

 

I’ve taken the liberty of grouping and summarizing the passages in the New Testament that say that they are commands. There are many other verses that give us direction but I think these are special. I’ve gone over this in more detail in   New Testament Commands

Here’s the summary [in my words]:

Repent of your sins and turn to God

You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind, and believing in his name.

Love your neighbor as yourself, loving them as Jesus loved us, brining salvation to the corners for the earth so that all might believe and obey God.

Gather according to the rules: everyone seeking God, sharing, & yielding to anyone with a special revelation. There should be 2 or 3 prophet/teachers[Not just 1], 2 or 3 tongues speakers but only if the tongues can be interpreted, and women should not take authority over the men

Live a holy life according to the truth, avoiding petty controversy over words that upsets and undermine people’s faith, run from all evil things, pursuing righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you,

Settle down and work to earn your own living, staying away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the traditions that Paul established (Tentmaker – Preacher, Servant Leader, and Participatory Gatherings).

If we are not honoring the God of the Bible, if we have twisted his words it doesn’t matter wether or not we keep his commands.  Please first take a loo at Which Jesus Do You Follow? So you can see how the list above evolved, I’ve included this back up information. I’ve grouped the commands into three groups,

The Greatest Commands:

NIV Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus replied, ” ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.‘

The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Summary of greatest Commands:

1. ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’

2. ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.‘

Love Related Commands:

NIV John 13:34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.

NIV John 15:12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.

NIV Romans 13:9 For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

NIV Galatians 5:14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

NIV 1 John 2:7[A New Commandment] Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before.

NIV 1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.

NIV 2 John 1:6 Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.

Summary of Greatest – Love Related Commands:

1. ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind, and believe in his name.

2. ‘Love your neighbor as yourself, loving as Jesus loved us.

Evangelism Related Commands

NIV Acts 13:47 For the Lord gave us this command when he said,‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’ ”

NIV Romans 16:26 But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made known to all Gentiles everywhere, so that they too might believe and obey him.

NIV 1 Corinthians 14:26,37 ‘Orderly Worship’ 26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. … 37 If you claim to be a prophet or think you are spiritual, you should recognize that what I am saying is a command from the Lord himself.

Summary of Greatest thru Evangelism Related Commands:

Obedience Related Commands:

NIV Acts 17:30 ‘God not an idol, but Lord. “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him.

NIV 2 Thessalonians 3:6 [An Exhortation to Proper Living] And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us.

NIV 2 Thessalonians 3:10 Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”

NIV 2 Thessalonians 3:12 We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living.

NIV 1 Timothy 5:21 ‘Advice about Widows, Elders, and Slaves’ – support relatives first, only good older widows should be dedicated to church, Elders who teach should get double rewards, need 2-3 witnesses against elders, don’t rush to appoint church leaders & slaves should respect their masters.’ … I solemnly command you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus and the holy angels to obey these instructions without taking sides or showing favoritism to anyone.

NIV 1 Timothy 6:11-14 ‘Final Instructions’ 11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses. …14that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

NIV 2 Tim 2:14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.

AMP 2 Tim 2:14 Remind [the people] of these facts and [solemnly] charge them in the presence of the Lord to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good but upsets and undermines the faith of the hearers. 15 Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

NIV 2 Peter 2:21 It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life.

NIV 2 John 1:4 [Live in the Truth] How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded.
