Keeping God’s Laws

This sounds pretty simple but there are some important things going on here that we need to understand. If we think keeping the law will get us into heaven we are in for a big surprise. At the same time we are not free to ignore God’s laws. Let’s take a look at a few key passages to see how this really works.

Please don’t forget about the  Commands Of The Lord

NLT Matt 5;18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 “But I warn you―unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

This passage tells us that failing to keep the law will not cost us our salvation, but it is still important to God. Then we are given the stern warning that salvation requires us to be more righteous than the teachers of the law and Pharisees to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Freedom in Christ

NLT Gal 5;1 So Christ has truly set us free . Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law . 2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law , you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace. 5 But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us. 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.

We are no longer slaves to the Law. When we are following Christ, placing our faith in him and living by the power of the Holy Spirit, he sets us free from the law.

Faith in the Son of God

NLT 1 John 5; 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. 2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 5 And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

Those who truly love God follow him and find that it is not difficult to obey the commands. We are not made right with God by keeping the law. Our Faith makes us right with God. It is not thru our own efforts that we overcome. We overcome our evil selfish desires as we seek and follow Christ.

Let me close with a reference that can really help us live out this life and find the peace that God has for us. We are to boldly claim and rejoice in this free gift of God, this new life in Christ, not worrying, praying about everything, both asking for what we need and thanking God for all he has done, to concentrate on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable, and thanking God for all he has done. Doing this will bring us peace.

NLT Phil 4;4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Dear God,

Please give us your peace, and help us to live out this new life in Christ, and find that keeping your commands is not burdensome. Amen
