New Testament Commands

Most people are very familiar with the Old Testament Commands, especially the 10 Commandments, but there are quite a few Commands in the New Testament. I’ve attempted to list and organize these. This can be used as a reference article, but the Bible also charges us to keep these Commands so we should be very familiar with them.

An Initial Warning about keeping Commands:

 NIV Romans 3:20

For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

NIV Hebrews 1:3

The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.

We are set right with God thru grace not works, we stay right not thru projects or effort but thru submissive obedience, thru extended Grace. Our job is to obey God’s Word and his Holy Spirit.

Verses Calling Us to Obey the Commands:

CEV Mat 5;19-20

If you reject even the least important command in the Law and teach others to do the same, you will be the least important person in the kingdom of heaven. But if you obey and teach others its commands, you will have an important place in the kingdom. 20You must obey God’s commands better than the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law obey them. If you don’t, I promise you that you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

Amp John 15:14

You are My friends if you keep on doing the things which I command you to do.

NIV Matthew 28:20

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

NIV 1 John 2:4

If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth

NIV 1 John 3:24

Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.

The greatest commands:

NIV Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus replied, ” ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

The 10 and their New Testament Refinements:

NIV Ex20;2-17

1. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

2. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

3. 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

4. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

5. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

6. 13 “You shall not murder.

[CEV Mat 5: 21You know that our ancestors were told, “Do not murder” and “A murderer must be brought to trial.” 22But I promise you that if you are angry with someone, you will have to stand trial. If you call someone a fool, you will be taken to court. And if you say that someone is worthless, you will be in danger of the fires of hell.]

7. 14 “You shall not commit adultery.

[CEV Mat 5: 27You know the commandment which says, “Be faithful in marriage.” 28But I tell you that if you look at another woman and want her, you are already unfaithful in your thoughts.

1 Corinthians 7:10 But for those who are married, I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband. 11 But if she does leave him, let her remain single or else be reconciled to him. And the husband must not leave his wife.]

8. 15 “You shall not steal .

9. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

10. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
