The Extent Of The Falling Away
The Falling Away:
YLT 2 Tim 1:13-15
13 The pattern hold thou of sound words, which from me thou didst hear, in faith and love that [is] in Christ Jesus;
14 the good thing committed guard thou through the Holy Spirit that is dwelling in us;
15 thou hast known this, that they did turn from me — all those in Asia, of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes;
Some say that this verse refers to a time in Rome whem Phygellis and Hemogenes and a few others from Asia turned from helping Paul. This post shows that interpretation to be false: Interpreting 2 Timothy 1 All the in the churches in Asia [churches just planted by a true apostle of Christ [some say these are the seven churches of Rev 2 &3]] had turned away from the truth – to the teachings of men [Phygellus and Hermogenes] in Paul’s lifetime. I don’t think this was a mistake. I think this is God’s plan for all who seek him, that they all fall into this “Babylon – lukewarm church” experience. It is clear that this error permeates through the virtually all of today’s organized churches!
YLT Luke 6:26
`Wo to you when all men shall speak well of you — for according to these things were their fathers doing to false prophets.
The popular preachers [throughout time] have been false prophets. It doesn’t declare that all popular preachers are necessarily false. It just says that the false preachers are among the popular! There are many other passages that talk about false prophets, wolves, and blind leaders. Perhaps I’m overstating this, but I think: Pastors Are Not God’s Shepherds!
YLT Matt 24:7-13
7 `For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places;
8 and all these [are] the beginning of sorrows;
9 then they shall deliver you up to tribulation, and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated by all the nations because of my name;
10 and then shall many be stumbled, and they shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.
11 `And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray;
12 and because of the abounding of the lawlessness, the love of the many shall become cold;
13 but he who did endure to the end, he shall be saved;
14 and this good news of the reign shall be proclaimed in all the world, for a testimony to all the nations; and then shall the end arrive.
15 `Whenever, therefore, ye may see the abomination of the desolation, that was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever is reading let him observe)
16 then those in Judea — let them flee to the mounts;
17 he on the house-top — let him not come down to take up any thing out of his house;
18 and he in the field — let him not turn back to take his garments.
19 `And wo to those with child, and to those giving suck in those days;
20 and pray ye that your flight may not be in winter, nor on a sabbath;
21 for there shall be then great tribulation, such as was not from the beginning of the world till now, no, nor may be.
22 And if those days were not shortened, no flesh would have been saved; but because of the chosen, shall those days be shortened.
23 `Then if any one may say to you, Lo, here [is] the Christ! or here! ye may not believe;
24 for there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and they shall give great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, also the chosen.
25 Lo, I did tell you beforehand.
26 `If therefore they may say to you, Lo, in the wilderness he is, ye may not go forth; lo, in the inner chambers, ye may not believe;
27 for as the lightning doth come forth from the east, and doth appear unto the west, so shall be also the presence of the Son of Man;
Vs 11 says that many are led astray by these false preachers, and their love will become cold. These false prophets and false teachers will lead many astray with their false signs wonders, even leading the chosen astray – for a time. The distinction of the chosen is that God will continue to draw them to “endure to the end”, their hearts will, in God’s time, be softened!!! These chosen will be rewarded with the Kingdom of God, the reward of the prophet.
YLT Matt 7:15-23
15`But, take heed of the false prophets, who come unto you in sheep’s clothing, and inwardly are ravening wolves.
16 From their fruits ye shall know them; do [men] gather from thorns grapes? or from thistles figs?
17 so every good tree doth yield good fruits, but the bad tree doth yield evil fruits.
18 A good tree is not able to yield evil fruits, nor a bad tree to yield good fruits.
19 Every tree not yielding good fruit is cut down and is cast to fire:
20 therefore from their fruits ye shall know them.
21 `Not every one who is saying to me Lord, lord, shall come into the reign of the heavens; but he who is doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, lord, have we not in thy name prophesied? and in thy name cast out demons? and in thy name done many mighty things?
23 and then I will acknowledge to them, that — I never knew you, depart from me ye who are working lawlessness.
Who are these ravening wolves that are know by their fruits of disobedience? The ones who work lawlessness are: Those ‘Whom God Knows Not‘
YLT 2 Peter 2:1-3
1 And there did come also false prophets among the people, as also among you there shall be false teachers, who shall bring in besides destructive sects, and the Master who bought them denying, bringing to themselves quick destruction,
2 and many shall follow out their destructive ways, because of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of,
3 and in covetousness[greed], with moulded words[lies], of you they shall make merchandise[take your money], whose judgment of old is not idle, and their destruction doth not slumber
Again we see that the many follow the destructive ways of these false prophets who are know by their greed, their ear tickling words, and taking your money.
YLT Lamentations 2:14
Thy prophets have seen for thee a false and insipid thing, And have not revealed concerning thine iniquity, To turn back thy captivity, And they see for thee false burdens and causes of expulsion.
Falling Backward – Being Snared
5 And Jehovah addeth to speak unto me again, saying:
6 `Because that this people hath refused The waters of Shiloah[small peacful creek near Jerusalem] that go softly, And is rejoicing with Rezin and the son of Remaliah[the leaders of Damascus and Israel],
7 Therefore, lo, the Lord is bringing up on them, The waters of the river, the mighty and the great, (The king of Asshur, and all his glory,) And it hath gone up over all its streams, And hath gone on over all its banks.
8 And it hath passed on into Judah, It hath overflown and passed over, Unto the neck it cometh, And the stretching out of its wings Hath been the fulness of the breadth of thy land, O Emmanu-El!
9 Be friends, O nations, and be broken, And give ear, all ye far off ones of earth, Gird yourselves, and be broken, Gird yourselves, and be broken.
10 Take counsel, and it is broken, Speak a word, and it doth not stand, Because of Emmanu-El!’
11 For thus hath Jehovah spoken unto me with strength of hand, and instructeth me against walking in the way of this people, saying,
12 `Ye do not say, A confederacy, To all to whom this people saith, A confederacy, And its fear ye do not fear, Nor declare fearful.
13 Jehovah of Hosts — Him ye do sanctify, And He [is] your Fear, and He your Dread,
14 And He hath been for a sanctuary, And for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of falling, To the two houses of Israel, For a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them have stumbled and fallen, And been broken, and snared, and captured.
16 Bind up the testimony, Seal the law among My disciples.
17 And I have waited for Jehovah, Who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob, And I have looked for Him.
18 Lo, I, and the children whom Jehovah hath given to me, [Are] for signs and for wonders in Israel, From Jehovah of Hosts, who is dwelling in Mount Zion.
19 And when they say unto you, `Seek unto those having familiar spirits, And unto wizards, who chatter and mutter, Doth not a people seek unto its God? — For the living unto the dead!
When men refuse God’s council and instead rely of confederations of nations – when they ignore the testimony of the rock, of Jesus, the nations will stumble and fall, they will be broken, snared and captured!!
2 Lo, a mighty and strong one [is] to the Lord, As a storm of hail — a destructive shower, As an inundation of mighty waters overflowing, He cast down to the earth with the hand.
3 By feet trodden down is the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,
4 And the fading flower of the beauty of his glory That [is] on the head of the fat valley, Hath been as its first-fruit before summer, That its beholder seeth, While it [is] yet in his hand he swalloweth it.
5 In that day is Jehovah of Hosts For a crown of beauty, and for a diadem of glory, To the remnant of His people.
6 And for a spirit of judgment To him who is sitting in the judgment, And for might [to] those turning back the battle to the gate.
7 And even these through wine have erred, And through strong drink have wandered, Priest and prophet erred through strong drink, They have been swallowed up of the wine, They wandered because of the strong drink, They have erred in seeing, They have stumbled judicially.
8 For all tables have been full of vomit, Filth — without place!
9 By whom doth He teach knowledge? And by whom doth He cause to understand the report? The weaned from milk, the removed from breasts,
10 For rule [is] on rule, rule on rule, line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there,
11 For by scorned lip, and by another tongue, Doth He speak unto this people.
12 Unto whom He hath said, `This [is] the rest, give ye rest to the weary, And this — the refreshing:’ And they have not been willing to hear,
13 And to whom a word of Jehovah hath been, Rule on rule, rule on rule, line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there, So that they go and have stumbled backward, And been broken, and snared, and captured.
14 Therefore, hear a word of Jehovah, ye men of scorning, Ruling this people that [is] in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said: `We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we have made a provision, An overflowing scourge, when it passeth over, Doth not meet us, Though we have made a lie our refuge, And in falsehood have been hidden.’
16 Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: `Lo, I am laying a foundation in Zion, A stone — a tried stone, a corner stone precious, a settled foundation, He who is believing doth not make haste.
17 And I have put judgment for a line, And righteousness for a plummet, And sweep away doth hail the refuge of lies, And the secret hiding-place do waters overflow.
18 And disannulled hath been your covenant with death, And your provision with Sheol doth not stand, An overflowing scourge, when it passeth over, Then ye have been to it for a treading-place.
19 From the fulness of its passing over it taketh you, For morning by morning it passeth over, By day and by night, And it hath been only a trembling to consider the report.
20 For shorter hath been the bed Than to stretch one’s self out in, And the covering hath been narrower Than to wrap one’s self up in.
21 For as [at] mount Perazim [where David smote the Philistines]rise doth Jehovah, As [at] the valley in Gibeon[Gibeon tricked Jews to make treaty saying they were from afar, Solomon also prayed for wisdom in Gideon] He is troubled, To do His work — strange [is] His work, And to do His deed — strange [is] His deed.’
22 And now, show not yourselves scorners, Lest strong be your bands, For a consumption, that is determined, I have heard, by the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, [Is] for all the land.
Vs 2, The Lord is a storm of hail, a destructive shower. He casts down to the earth a destructive shower, an inundation of mighty waters that drowns the drunkards of Ephraim. Vs 5-6, The Lord is a crown of beauty and glory to his remnant, but to those who sit in judgment, erring through strong drink, are tables filled with vomit. So who does the Lord teach, giving knowledge and understanding, Those weaned from drinking milk, those weaned from the breast. This is developed further in Spiritual Maturity
Vs 17 – The hail sweeps away the refuge of lies for the few that are chosen. It overflows the false covenant that they made with death [vs 18]. God dis-annuls are todays’ church membership rituals and all men “prayers of dedication/submission”. These mean nothing in God’s eyes. They are vein efforts of proud men. God Chooses Us
19 Who [is] blind but My servant? And deaf as My messenger I send? Who [is] blind as he who is at peace, Yea, blind, as the servant of Jehovah?
20 Seeing many things, and thou observest not, Opening ears, and he heareth not.
21 Jehovah hath delight for the sake of His righteousness, He magnifieth law, and maketh honourable.
22 And this [is] a people seized and spoiled, Snared in holes — all of them, And in houses of restraint they were hidden, They have been for a prey, And there is no deliverer, A spoil, and none is saying, `Restore.’
23 Who among you giveth ear [to] this? Attendeth, and heareth afterwards.
24 Who hath given Jacob for a spoil, And Israel to the spoilers? Is it not Jehovah — He against whom we sinned? Yea, they have not been willing in His ways to walk, Nor have they hearkened to His law.
25 And He poureth on him fury, His anger, and the strength of battle, And it setteth him on fire round about, And he hath not known, And it burneth against him, and he layeth it not to heart!
Vs 19 God blinds us all for a time. The veil is lifted from God’s true remnant after a time, after they are chosen. Until this choosing even God’s true remnant sees many things but observes not, still snared in holes. These folks, because they are still trying to look thru a veil have not willing to walk in his ways. Even after the day of their choosing the chosen receive God’s fury!!
Failing to Follow Paul’s Example
The Warning YLT 2 Peter 3:14-17
14 wherefore, beloved, these things waiting for, be diligent, spotless and unblameable, by Him to be found in peace,
15 and the long-suffering of our Lord count ye salvation, according as also our beloved brother Paul — according to the wisdom given to him — did write to you,
16 as also in all the epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, among which things are certtain hard to be understood, which the untaught and unstable do wrest, as also the other Writings, unto their own destruction.
17 Ye, then, beloved, knowing before, take heed, lest, together with the error of the impious being led away, ye may fall from your own stedfastness,
18 and increase ye in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him [is] the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen.
Those who are beloved of God are told to be diligent, spotless and un-blameable, to find their peace in long suffering for salvation, as Paul did. Paul received his wisdom from no human source. He received direct revelation from God. Many things that Paul taught are hard to understand. Many untaught and unstable teachers fight against these teachings to their own destruction. They are impious [ungodly, unholy, irreverent]. These men who refuse to Paul lead others astray so that their followers are fallen from steadfastness!!
The Appeal YLT Phil 3:17-21
17 become followers together of me, brethren, and observe those thus walking, according as ye have us — a pattern;
18 for many walk of whom many times I told you — and now also weeping tell — the enemies of the cross of the Christ!
19 whose end [is] destruction, whose god [is] the belly, and whose glory [is] in their shame, who the things on earth are minding.
20 For our citizenship is in the heavens, whence also a Saviour we await — the Lord Jesus Christ —
21 who shall transform the body of our humiliation to its becoming conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working of his power, even to subject to himself the all things.
Paul gives seekers a pattern to follow. We are to walk as Paul walked, tentmakers, servants, accepting that we are the worst of sinners, hypocrites, sons of perdition.
Coming Out Of Babylon
YLT Rev 18:1-10
1 And after these things I saw another messenger coming down out of the heaven, having great authority, and the earth was lightened from his glory,
2 and he did cry in might — a great voice, saying, `Fall, fall did Babylon the great, and she became a habitation of demons, and a hold of every unclean spirit, and a hold of every unclean and hateful bird,
3 because of the wine of the wrath of her whoredom have all the nations drunk, and the kings of the earth with her did commit whoredom, and merchants of the earth from the power of her revel were made rich.
4 And I heard another voice out of the heaven, saying, `Come forth out of her, My people, that ye may not partake with her sins, and that ye may not receive of her plagues,
5 because her sins did follow — unto the heaven, and God did remember her unrighteousness.
6 Render to her as also she did render to you, and double to her doubles according to her works; in the cup that she did mingle mingle to her double.
7 `As much as she did glorify herself and did revel, so much torment and sorrow give to her, because in her heart she saith, I sit a queen, and a widow I am not, and sorrow I shall not see;
8 because of this, in one day, shall come her plagues, death, and sorrow, and famine; and in fire she shall be utterly burned, because strong [is] the Lord God who is judging her;
9 and weep over her, and smite themselves for her, shall the kings of the earth, who with her did commit whoredom and did revel, when they may see the smoke of her burning,
10 from afar having stood because of the fear of her torment, saying, Wo, wo, the great city! Babylon, the strong city! because in one hour did come thy judgment.
Vs 4 call God’s people to come out of Babylon, so that they will not be judged for her sins and receive her plagues. Babylon will be judged because she glorified herself and reveled saying I am a queen and I am not a widow and sorrow I will not see, she will receive the plagues of death sorrow and famine in one hour.
YLT Act 20:28-32
28 `Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit made you overseers, to feed the assembly of God that He acquired through His own blood,
29 for I have known this, that there shall enter in, after my departing, grievous wolves unto you, not sparing the flock,
30 and of your own selves there shall arise men, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
31 `Therefore, watch, remembering that three years, night and day, I did not cease with tears warning each one;
32 and now, I commend you, brethren, to God, and to the word of His grace, that is able to build up, and to give you an inheritance among all those sanctified.
Vs 30 warns that “of our own selves” men shall arise drawing disciples away after themselves! There are other verses that show gathering followers is wrong.
KJV 2 Peter 2:1-3 False Prophets
1But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3And through covetousness shall they with feigned [false] words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
These False Prophets make merchandise of their followers!! This is developed in Are You In Christ’s Sheepfold? John 10 talks about the difference between good shepherds [those who sacrifice their lives for the sheep] and the “hired hands” in John 10.
AMP 2 Cor 11: 2-15
2 For I am [a]zealous for you with a godly eagerness and a divine jealousy, for I have betrothed you to one Husband, to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
3 But [now] I am fearful, lest that even as the serpent beguiled Eve by his cunning, so your minds may be corrupted and seduced from wholehearted and sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
4 For [you seem readily to endure it] if a man comes and preaches another Jesus than the One we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the [Spirit] you [once] received or a different gospel from the one you [then] received and welcomed; you tolerate [all that] well enough!
5 Yet I consider myself as in no way inferior to these [precious] [b]extra-super [false] apostles.
6 But even if [I am] unskilled in speaking, yet [I am] not [unskilled] in knowledge [I know what I am talking about]; we have made this evident to you in all things.
7 But did I perhaps make a mistake and do you a wrong in debasing and cheapening myself so that you might be exalted and enriched in dignity and honor and happiness by preaching God’s Gospel without expense to you?
8 Other churches I have robbed by accepting [more than their share of] support for my ministry [from them in order] to serve you.
9 And when I was with you and ran short financially, I did not burden any [of you], for what I lacked was abundantly made up by the brethren who came from Macedonia. So I kept myself from being burdensome to you in any way, and will continue to keep [myself from being so].
10 As the truth of Christ is in me, this my boast [of independence] shall not be debarred (silenced or checked) in the regions of Achaia (most of Greece).
11 And why? Because I do not love you [do not have a preference for you, wish you well, and regard your welfare]? God perceives and knows that I do!
12 But what I do, I will continue to do, [for I am determined to maintain this independence] in order to cut off the claim of those who would like [to find an occasion and incentive] to claim that in their boasted [mission] they work on the same terms that we do.
13 For such men are false apostles [spurious, counterfeits], deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles (special messengers) of Christ (the Messiah).
14 And it is no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light;
15 So it is not surprising if his servants also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. [But] their end will correspond with their deeds.
Paul never accepted money from the assemblies that he was actively ministering to. In fact he declares that he would rather die than accept money for preaching to folks!!
[NLT 1 Cor 9:15 Yet I have never used any of these rights. And I am not writing this to suggest that I want to start now. In fact, I would rather die than lose my right to boast about preaching without charge.]
Paul does take money for ministering [in 2Cor 11:9 above], never following model of used by today’s preachers – he only accepts support as a missionary! There is is a clear distinction here.
NLT 2 Thess 3:6-10 An Exhortation to Proper Living
6 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers[c] who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received[d] from us. 7 For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you. 8 We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give you an example to follow. 10 Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”
We looked at the warning about falling away. It is interesting to note how completed this falling away was! We then looked at a few passages that warn about false prophets, folks falling backward and being snared, and then finally to the coming out of Babylon.
Please help us to see more of your Glory, your power, and your truth, removing the veils from our eyes. In Jesus mighty name we pray.
