Living A Godly Life, How We Do It

Peter boldly declares that God has already provided everything that we need to live Godly lives!!

NLT 2 Peter 1:1-11 Greetings from Peter

1This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.

I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairnessb of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.

2May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.

Growing in Faith

3By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

5In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

10So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. 11Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God has already given us absolutely everything that we need to live the Godly life that he calls us to. Verse 3 promises that if we get to know God, his glory and his excellence, his promises will enable us to share in his divine nature! By knowing God and claiming his promises we can escape the corruption of the world and overcome our human desires! When we combine this knowledge of God with faith love and patient endurance God can use us! God promises these folks access to the Kingdom of God! Let’s look at how we are to run this race, to live this life of faith; trusting in Jesus – the author and the initiator of our faith!

Here is a simplified diagram of how God can use us and show us how to live a Godly Life:

NLT Heb 12:1-13 God’s Discipline Proves His Love

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion [KJV author] who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. 3Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. 4After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.

5And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said,

My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline,

and don’t give up when he corrects you.

6For the Lord disciplines those he loves,

and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

7As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? 8If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all. 9Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

10For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. 11No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

12So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. 13Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

We seldom look for God as a disciplinarian, but his word is clear here. If we are God’s child we will see his discipline! When we see and submit to his divine discipline we are promised a peaceful harvest of right living!! This will strengthen our faith and help us to claim all his promises!!!

Summary:

God has already given us absolutely everything that we need to live a Godly life, the life we are called to live. If we get to know God, his glory, his excellence, and claim his promises; he will enable us to share in his divine nature! This is how we can escape the corruption of the world and overcome our evil selfish human desires! When we combine our knowledge of God with faith love and patient endurance God uses us and promises us access to his kingdom, to the Kingdom of God! We must run the race he sets before us living this life of faith by trusting in Jesus. He is both the author and the perfector of our faith! When we accept his divine discipline we are promised a peaceful harvest of right living!! This will strengthen our faith and help us to live out all his promises to us!!!

Dear God,
