Discerning The Times: Preparing For Our Judgment

Luke tells us that we do pretty well at judging the weather, seeing the rain clouds coming our way, but we are not good at discerning the times – seeing our guilt and making corrections. When we don’t make peace with our judge, repenting and seeking forgiveness for our sins, we will be held accountable.  He will put us in prison until we pay for all of our sins, for all our deliberate transgressions against God. Here’s the passage in the Aramaic Bible in Plain English:

Luke 12:49-59

49“I have come to set fire to the earth, and I only wish it were already burning.” 50“I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and I am much afflicted until it is fulfilled.” 51“Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? I say to you, no, but division.”52“From now on there shall be five in one house who are divided, three against two and two against three.” 53“For a father will be divided against his son and son against his father, mother against her daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

54He said to the crowds, “Whenever you see a cloud that rises from the West, and at once you say, ‘Rain is coming’, it is so.” 55“And when a south wind blows, you say, ‘It will be hot’, and it is.” 56“Accepters of faces, you know to discern the face of the earth and sky, how do you not discern this time?”

57“Why do you not judge the truth from yourselves?” 58“For whenever you go with your plaintiff to the Ruler, while you are on the road, give merchandise and be ransomed from him, lest he bring you to the Judge and the Judge deliver you to the Officer and the Officer should cast you into prison.” 59“I say to you, you shall not go out from there until you give the last quarter cent.

We are told that we do pretty well interpreting the signs of the weather, but do not discern the times [vs 56]. The bible warns that all are headed for Christ’s judgment. Here are some other passages that talk about this time of judgment.

NLT 2 Cor 10:10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

NLT Matthew 12:35-37

35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

The Luke 12 passage [top] is telling us to settle up with Christ now! Otherwise we will receive the just judgment of Christ, we will be held accountable for our sins. If we continue in deliberate sin we will lose our reward, the higher Kingdom of God, and we will drink the cup of wrath that we deserve.

The cups of wrath are discussed further in The Fate Of The Wicked and The Fate Of The Ungodly

Dear God,

Please help us to come to you in true repentance, service, humility, love and forgiveness; to fully turn from ego, pride, boasting, judging, and hatred. May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
