Why We Must Refrain From Casting Pearls To Swine

I’ve mentioned that we gain understanding when we look into and appreciate the specifics in sister scriptures, scriptures that pull us in different directions. I think that each passage of scripture has many “brothers and sister” that when we understand the relationship between these passages we better understand their meaning. I was trying to grasp why we are told not to cast our pearls before swine.

NLT Matthew 7:5-7

5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

The first part of this is clearly spelled out  in the passage. When we try to relate pearls, deep spiritual truths, to unholy people they will not understand. They will see our efforts to explain these deep truths as an attack and strike back at us! Other passages tell us to gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Is this a contradiction? Let’s take a look.

NLT 2 Tim 2:24-26

24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

We are to gently instruct those who oppose the truth. I think this is talking about the same people as the passage above, the unholy, those who are not set apart for God. We need to understand that God doesn’t ask us to change these peoples hearts, that’s clearly his job. We should pray for them, praying that God will change their hearts so that they can learn the truth, come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap.  Only then can they see the devil deception, and find their way out of captivity!

Let’s look at the passage where Paul tells us that he doesn’t preach with human wisdom but the power of the Holy Spirit. He goes to explain that he is only free to discusses the mystery’s of God among mature believers.

Paul’s Message of Wisdom   NLT 1 Cor 2:1-12

1 When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan. 2 For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. 4 And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. 5 I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.

6 Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. 7 No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 8 But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say,

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,

and no mind has imagined

what God has prepared

for those who love him.”

10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. 12 And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

I believe this is a very pertinent scripture to understand the “casting pearls to swine” question. Today’s pastors are busy building their monument to prophets.  They are the ones who are held responsible for crucifying the Lord! Building Monuments To Prophets

The guidance here is that we are to reveal the hidden mysteries of God only when we are among mature believers, folks who know the difference between right and wrong. Humble servants who have turned from sin and worldliness to follow God and his Holy Spirit. The deeper spiritual truths thus become off limits in discussions with both spiritual infants and with the unholy!!!Deceived Deceivers

Think about how Jesus revealed these deep spiritual truths when he walked this earth.  He spoke them all  in parables!   All our resorting to human reasoning and scripture reference will do nothing to reveal the truths of God.  If Jesus in all his wisdom and power spoke these understandings in parables , so should we!!!  Paul in 1 Cor 1:21  even declares that the world will never know God thru human wisdom!!!

I have seen this first hand.  Even when I follow the best “rules of logic” presenting scripture upon scripture to spiritually discerning folks, none seem grasp the pearl, the revelation that god has revealed to me!!!!

Recap:

The spiritual pearls that we are not to cast before swine are the deep spiritual truths of God, God’s deep secrets. When we speak to unholy folks or spiritual infants we are limited very plain teaching, and full reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit! This is the only way that we can possibly get thru to these folks!!

I think this is a great example of the simplicity that we are called to. The post argues that today’s churches are not mystery Babylon. Laurielassley’s comment near the bottom simply warns against turning God’s house of prayer into a den of thieves. She doesn’t fully develop multiple  arguments thinking it is her job to fully convince these folks of the truth.  She “preaches” very simply relying fully on the power of the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.

She doesn’t talk about the abomination or the extortion of tithing. She just warns with scripture about turning God’s house of prayer into a den of thieves.

I believe this is the lesson – start simple relying on the power of the Holy Spirit. Don’t try to argue with them. Don’t even try to lead them to conclusions, just present the issue and ask the pertinent questions. Just present the God’s Gospel of Peace, pray pray for them, and trust. After I wrote that I was immediately convicted that we need to  follow up. Perhaps we are to pray for them for a while, then come back and ask them what they are thinking – where they are at. We may be surprised what we hear!

Dear God,

Help us to know our audience, and to embrace our simple humble role. Help us to grasp that we will never change anyone’s heart. That is your role. Help us to hear you, to gently guide them back to you, to plug them into the vine. Help us to simply to speak your gospel of peace, to tell folks that you are reachable, that your are knowable, that you want to walk in communion with us! – that our pride, selfishness, and lusts keep us from this communion.  When we are friends of the world we become your enemies!!  In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen.
