The Past, Present, and Future Day Of The Lord

Many people think that the Day of the Lord is still to come. Other think that it is already passed. Could they both be right? I think both groups make the same error. They presume ‘the day of the Lord’ is a one time event on the time line of history. I used to think this way too, but now see it differently. I humbly ask you to seek God’s perspective on this.

God is not restrained in man’s linear time lines. God is omnipresent, outside the limits of time. We humans tend to project our limitations onto God and his word even though we know his ways are far above our ways! It took a long time for me to see it, but after many warnings I see that trying to interpret God’s word in terms of specific times and historical events is a misguided perhaps even foolish endeavor.

The Preterits say that the Day of the Lord occurred at the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. While this perspective is supported by some scriptures, I believe it keeps us from a fuller understanding of these scriptures.

Let me present my current thoughts on this topic and then we’ll look at a few pertinent scriptures. I believe the Day of the Lord is at the same time, a past , a present, and a future event; that whenever Christ’s disciple passes from this life he sees the same things that John chronicled in the beginning of Rev 4:1-11:

he sees a door open,

he hears a ‘trumpet’ say come up hither,

he sees a throne in heaven with Jesus sitting on it,

he sees the 24 elders seated around the throne with white clothes and gold crowns,

he sees the lightning flash,

he hears the voices and thunder[perhaps the seven thunders?],

he sees the sevenfold spirit of God- the seven lamps burning before the sea of Glass and the four beasts. Here that passage.

KJV Rev 4:1-11

1After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

2And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

3And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

4And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

5And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

6And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

7And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

8And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

9And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

I believe that this passage describes what the humble seeker sees when he passes. He sees a door open, hears a trumpet say come up hither, then he sees a throne in heaven and then Jesus sitting on the Throne. Then he sees 24 seats around the throne with the 24 elders sitting there clothed in white with gold crowns. Then he sees the lightning flash and hears the voices, the thunder and see the seven lamps burning before the throne, the sevenfold spirit of God. Finally we see the sea of Glass and the four beasts with six wings full of eyes who say Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

I don’t think that those who rejected the Holy Spirit will have the same experience. I suspect that those who reject the Holy Spirit and his restraining influence, those continuing in deliberate sin, those taking advantage of the poor and weak, those considering themselves greater than others will find themselves at the battle of Armageddon to experience the wrath and destruction of God.

So all disciples who have passed from earth have already experienced their day of the Lord. I suspect that all who have passed since Jesus declared the year of the Lord in Luke 4:18-30, until now have already experienced this. [Perhaps the start might have been a little later when Jesus spoke ‘It is Finished’ on the cross] Either way, all disciples who now pass are experiencing their day of the Lord. All disciples that will pass in the future, all of us currently living in Christ will experience our soon coming day of the Lord! This is the passage where Jesus announces the acceptable year of the Lord.

KJV Luke 4:18-30

18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

23And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

I believe that all disciples and all who cared for the weak and poor since Jesus announced the acceptable year of the Lord have experienced the events described from Rev 4.

Remember Jesus’ words to the thief on the cross, today you will be with me in paradise [Luke 23:43]. I believe this identifies the thief’s day of the Lord to be the day of his passing!

KJV 1 Cor 15:50-58

50Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep[Those Who Never Taste Death ], but we shall all be changed[when we pass],

52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

55O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

56The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

57But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Most again restrict this to a one time event, but that clearly does not satisfy the requirements of the soon coming passages [Ez 12 and Matt 24]. Since the time of Ezekiel all new prophecies were experienced by the first generation to hear them! Since John prophesies about the day of the Lord in Revelations, all his hearers must have already experience their day of the Lord!

KJV Matt 24:15-28

15When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

16Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

17Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days![woe to those trying to nurse spiritual infants – limiting their hearers to infant formula withholding the real spiritual food -see below]

20But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

23Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25Behold, I have told you before.

26Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.[Jesus is not coming back to Earth to rescue his followers. He is already here ruling with them spiritually, and when the pass they find themselves in Heaven!]

27For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

28For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Baby food vs Real food

KJV Heb 5:12Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which [be] the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk [is] unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Real food is only digestible for those with spiritual maturity, those with discernment, who know the difference between Good and evil! Those still using milk are unskillful in the word. They are dull of hearing and can not teach, but God wants to reestablish his royal priesthood, the priesthood of all believers! I think the key distinction is explained here [Gatherings About God Or Gatherings With God]. The Biblical worship gathering calls us all to seek and share what the Holy Spirit is telling us. Rev 12:11 even says that we overcome by the word of our testimony. When we worship God his way, he promises to lead the gathering into all truth! Then we will be living in real communion with God [Real Communion Services]

Dear God,

Help us to seek and share, to discern the truth, to know the difference between what is good and what is evil. Prepare us for the stong meat of your word, to properly divide the difficult truths and to grow in communion with you. Help us to simply trust and rely on you to lead us into all truth, to overcome by the word of our testimony and reject this worldly sermon plague that has so completely corrupted this earth. We ask and trust you to clear out the leaven of the pharisee, self ambition and the old leaven of malice and wickedness. Restore us to integrity sincerity and truth. In Jesus mighty name we pray, Amen.
