Earth Dwellers and God’s Sword Of Separation
Bible readers are warned that Jesus did not come to bring peace, but a sword. We hear all about the peace of the Lord at Today’s Weak Churches, but so few church goers ever grow to the maturity required to really experience it. The Bible tells us that Jesus did not come to bring peace to the world, but a sword of separation. Only those who truly seek him will experience his peace that passes understanding. Let’s dig into the pertinent passages to see whats really going on.
NLT Matt 10:27 What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear! 28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 What is the price of two sparrows―one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. 32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven. 34 “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace , but a sword . 35 ‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!’ 37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. 39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
This passage tells us a lot about the sword of separation that Jesus brings . If we belong to Jesus, if we are his disciple and carry the cross he places on our shoulders, then we belong to God. We are not to cling to these worldly lives embracing comfort and personal satisfaction. We are rather to offer our lives as a living holy sacrifice. We are to show our love for God by keeping him first in our lives, seeking his wisdom, his glory and his will. This passage also warns us that those who deny Jesus on earth will be denied in heaven.
There is another passage that talks about the sword that Jesus brings, the words of God. God speaks to us thru both written and spoken words, thru the Bible and the Holy Spirit. When we are really seeking God, seeking him with all our heart we will be guided by both his written and spoken word!
NLT Heb 4:6 So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. 7 So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” 8 Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. 9 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
Christ Is Our High Priest
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Yes, the sword is God’s word for us, both his his Holy Spirit, and his written word. His sword exposes of inner most thoughts and desires. It reveals our true motives. Are we seeking and following him or are we using his word to build earthly kingdoms [churches]?
2 Tim 3:14 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
But Jesus Is The Prince of Peace
NLT Is 9: 6 For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His government and its peace
will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
will make this happen!
And Isn’t Peace is one of the Fruits of the Spirit:
ESV Gal 5:16-26 Walk by the Spirit
16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
So when we are walking in the Spirit, following Jesus we will see peace, gentleness, and self-control replacing strife jealousy anger and division. The fruits of the spirit will displace the works of the flesh. We can still expect trials and suffering in the world as Jesus did, but our personal response to these will reveal the inner peace that comes as we seek and follow God. This passage talks about the “Peace that Passes Understanding”.
4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again―rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
When we are humbly obediently following God, living in the Spirit, living as the new creation in Christ we are promised this peace that passes understanding. Don’t expect to experience this peace when you remain in sin and rebellion against God. This peace is promised to the holy [set apart for God] seeker-follower. If we are still rejecting God, living in deliberate sin we will experience the roaring of the sea, not the peace of God. Take a look at The Six Levels Of Sin and Pete’s appeal to come out of Babylon.
Please reveal your sword of separation to the world. Help everyone to know you, your righteousness, your holiness, your power, and your love. Help us to turn from our selfishness and pride to submission and humility. Please forgive our sins and give us humble responsive hearts. In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen.
