The Unpardonable Sin And The Beast

I was seeking to understand the unpardonable sin.  Men commit this sin when they take over the role of the Holy Spirit, when they place themselves between the seekers and their Lord, essentially cutting off the seeker from their Lord.

Let’s start off with the passage on the unpardonable sin in Matthew.

Jesus and the Prince of Demons

NLT Matt 12:22 Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. 23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart. 26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive. 27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you. 29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man like Satan and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house. 30 “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me. 31 “Every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come. 33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. 34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.

So blasphemy against Jesus can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit simply cannot; it is unforgivable, unpardonable. Immediately the passage goes on talk about good and evil hearts and their fruits. Just prior we see the evil religious leader attempting to attribute Jesus’ miracles to the Devil.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary says Blasphemy “denotes any kind of calumny, or evil-speaking, or abuse (1 Kings 21:10; Acts 13:45; 18:6 etc.). Our Lord was accused of blasphemy when he claimed to be the Son of God

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

NLT Matt 9:1 Jesus climbed into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town. 2 Some people brought to him a paralyzed man on a mat.   Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Be encouraged, my child! Your sins are forgiven.” 3 But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, “That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?” 4 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” 7 And the man jumped up and went home! 8 Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for sending a man with such great authority.

Many say the unpardonable sin is simply rejecting Jesus and his gospel message but that doesn’t add up.  If blasphemy is pretending to be God, then blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is presuming to be the Holy Spirit, taking on the roles of the Holy Spirit.   Remember that blasphemy against Jesus, taking on Jesus role, can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot.

The role of the Holy Spirit is to lead God seekers into all truth, to show them the future, and to tell us all that Jesus has for us.

NLT John 16: 12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

LB 1 Cor 14:12  Since you are so anxious to have special gifts from the Holy Spirit, ask him for the very best, for those that will be of real help to the whole church.

The Holy Spirit gives out special gifts that help the whole gathering, the whole church.  When we go thru all of 1 Cor 14 we see that the Holy Spirit is the true leader of a worship gathering.

LB Act 9:31 .  Meanwhile, the church had peace throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria, and grew in strength and numbers. The believers learned how to walk in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

The gathering, the church, grows in strength and numbers as believers learn to walk in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. I think that many today commit the unpardonable sin. Many are taking over the role of the Holy Spirit, blaspheming the Holy Spirit, not honoring his role as the leader of the Gathering. Those ‘Whom God Knows Not’

NLT 2 Cor 11:3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.

This “preaching a different gospel”  is part of the problem. Blasphemy against The Holy Spirit is not limited to blasphemy against the Gospel message.  This is closely related to taking the Mark of the Beast.

Understanding The Devil’s Mark Of The Beast

Dear God,

Please help your seekers to treat you with reverence and honor and fear.  Keep us from the scoffers, the men who scoff at your power and exalt themselves, building their monuments to prophets.  Protect us from the fall of Babylon and the rejection of Laodicea, the events of the sixth seal.  In Jesus Mighty Name We Pray! Amen.
