Churchiosity 101: Three Easy Steps To Managing An All Powerful God

Today’s churches teach a simple three step plan so that we mortals can come to terms with an all powerful God. These terms are found nowhere in God’s word, but this is the Salvation by churchiosity gospel practiced at the vast majority of todays organized Christian churches:

  1. Come Listen to my sermons
  2. Give to build my building and pay my salary
  3. Say a prayer that I wrote that gives you the keys to heaven [and perhaps Volunteer and do your part to keep my machine going]

Do you see the absurdity of this? There are not many churches that actually preach this, yet it continues week after week.  God sees thru to our deepest motives and he is much less concerned with what we say than what we do.   We cannot keep God at a safe distance. We are either walking with him, or fighting against him! God places a clear choice before his followers day after day. Will we humbly seek and follow him and his Holy Spirit or will we keep on trying to play our religious games. Following Men’s Religions Spoils Your Soul. God will make us choose between being a Seeker Follower or a A Presumer – Performer

The life that Jesus calls his followers to is not the rock star life of comfort, plenty, prestige and honor. The people living these kinds of lives are trapped in worldliness, and the bible declares them God’s enemies! Take a look:

LB James 4:4. You are like an unfaithful wife who loves her husband’s enemies. Don’t you realize that making friends with God’s enemies–the evil pleasures of this world–makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, that if your aim is to enjoy the evil pleasure of the unsaved world, you cannot also be a friend of God. 5. Or what do you think the Scripture means when it says that the Holy Spirit, whom God has placed within us, watches over us with tender jealousy? 6. But he gives us more and more strength to stand against all such evil longings. As the Scripture says, God gives strength to the humble, but sets himself against the proud and haughty.

All believers are called to be humble servants, who gratefully carry the burden that he places on our shoulders. We are called to reject these worldly treasures and adopt the life of a humble servant. We know that on our own we can produce nothing good.

GWT James 1:16 My dear brothers and sisters, don’t be fooled. 17 Every good present and every perfect gift comes from above, from the Father who made the sun, moon, and stars. The Father doesn’t change like the shifting shadows produced by the sun and the moon. 18 God decided to give us life through the word of truth to make us his most important creatures. 19 Remember this, my dear brothers and sisters: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and should not get angry easily. 20 An angry person doesn’t do what God approves of. 21 So get rid of all immoral behavior and all the wicked things you do. Humbly accept the word that God has placed in you. This word can save you. 22 Do what God’s word says. Don’t merely listen to it, or you will fool yourselves. 23 If someone listens to God’s word but doesn’t do what it says, he is like a person who looks at his face in a mirror, 24 studies his features, goes away, and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 However, the person who continues to study God’s perfect teachings that make people free and who remains committed to them will be blessed. People like that don’t merely listen and forget; they actually do what God’s teachings say.

Like the servant in Luke 17, we need to have an attitude of humility; only doing what was expected.

LB Luke 17:7. When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, he doesn’t just sit down and eat, but first prepares his master’s meal and serves him his supper before he eats his own. And he is not even thanked, for he is merely doing what he is supposed to do. 10. Just so, if you merely obey me, you should not consider yourselves worthy of praise. For you have simply done your duty!”

Really the best thing we can do, the only thing that honors God is living in obedience to his Holy Spirit. If perhaps while we are doing this we win a Nobel prize or receive any worldly honors we must remember that we are not worthy of praise, we have only been doing our duty!

Speaking for myself here, I must note that I don’t do such a good job at this. I sometimes manage to do my duty, but so often wimp out, or miss out because of I’m not really listening. James tells us why we don’t hear God’s wisdom:

LB James 1:1. From: James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. To: Jewish Christians scattered everywhere. Greetings! 2. Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, 3. for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. 4. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete 5. If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it. 6. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to tell you, for a doubtful mind will be as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind; 7. and every decision you then make will be uncertain, as you turn first this way, and then that. If you don’t ask with faith, don’t expect the Lord to give you any solid answer.

If we ask for wisdom but lack faith we are in trouble. If, however we nourish that mustard seed of faith living in the spirit, we will be able to hear. So often we listen with worldly ears, and wonder why we don’t hear much. To hear spiritual things we need to be listening with spiritual ears! We concentrate on spiritual things by: Building heavenly treasure (helping the weak, giving to the poor); reverently fearing our creator; being the thankful servant, seeking only his will and his glory.Seeing Straight, Seeing With Spiritual Eyes

We are called to continue in fellowship with God. I think this passage on “Praying Continually” helps us to accomplish this.

NLT 1 Thess 5:14 Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. 16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying.[NIV Pray continually] 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil.

I think that the idea of praying continually is really just an attitude of walking with the Holy Spirit. We can’t hide anything from God, so praying continually can be a recognition of God’s attention on us – an ongoing attempt commune with and honor God!

Dear God,

We are a silly bunch. We see the power of your word in your creation yet fail to honor you with the fear and deep reverence that you deserve. We continue to follow leaders who scoff at you, Denying God By The Way We Live

Help us to better grasp what you mean when you ask us to weigh the cost.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

P.S. Weighing The Costs;

GWT Luke 14:21 And coming up that servant reported these things to his lord. And the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and the maimed, and the lame and the blind. 22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and still there is room. 23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you that none of these men who were invited shall taste of my supper. 25 And great crowds went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me, he cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he may have enough to finish it; 29 lest perhaps, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all those seeing begin to mock him, 30 saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not first sit down and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So then, everyone of you who does not forsake all his possessions, he cannot be My disciple. 34 Salt is good, but if the salt has become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned? 35 It is not fit for the land, nor for manure, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Salt is only good if it remains salty. Disciples are only good if they remain discipling. If we allow anyone or anything to take God’s rightful top place in our hearts we are not his disciple! If we are trying to pull a Jonah, refusing to follow God’s call, refusing to carry our cross, we are not his disciple!

We can expect the call to follow God to cost us everything. Two things are specifically mentioned here; our closest relationships, and all of our possessions.

Are we ready to become a disciple of Christ, or will we continue to play our churchiosity games?Gatherings About God Or Gatherings With God
