Denying God By The Way We Live
The bible declares ‘No one can say Jesus Lord, except by the Holy Spirit [1 Cor 12;3] yet week after week today’s priesthood refuses to honor God. They refuse to honor the believer gathering commands in 1 Cor 14, having spirit led participatory gatherings with 2 or 3 preachers. They refuse to follow Pauls tentmaker preacher example. They refuse to become servant leaders. I was trying to understand what was going on here. Could it be that these are the men who know the spirit and have a form of Godliness but deny God’s power. Let’s look at the passages.
NLT 2 Tim 2;10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. 11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. 14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.
An Approved Worker
15 Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. 16 Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.
It can’t be a matter of unfaithfulness, God is still faithful to the unfaithful. For these people to be rejected by God, they must be denying God! I think this passage explains what is going on.
Denying God by the way we live.
NLT Tit 1;15 Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.
Even though we claim to know God we can deny him by the way we live. We can continue in our evil selfish desires. We may not be able to attain the purity God requires in our mind and conscious. This corruption disqualifies us by preventing our transformation and we end up denying God by the way we live.
If you are following a leader who ‘denies God by the way they live’ your leader is ‘detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good‘. Pastoral Virus Good And Bad Preachers, Know God’s Distinction
If you have a corrupt unbelieving mind, and are denying him by the way you live, any efforts you make to serve God will still be detestable, and worthless for doing anything good! [Tit 1:16 above]
So how can we be sure that we have a pure believing mind? The above passage points us toward having a pure heart. Let’s look at some passages that talk about pure hearts.
NLT 1 Cor 1;30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.”
Christ makes us pure and holy as we live in him and as he frees us from sin. In the following passage Paul fears the Corinthians will be corrupted because they lack discernment – they can’t tell good from evil preaching, because they can’t discern the truth from lies!
NLT 2 Cor 11;2 For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride to one husband—Christ. 3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed. 5 But I don’t consider myself inferior in any way to these “super apostles” who teach such things. 6 I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I’m not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every possible way. 7 Was I wrong when I humbled myself and honored you by preaching God’s Good News to you without expecting anything in return?
Our pure undivided devotion to Christ can be corrupted by the serpent, and by preachers who distort Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Gospel. I don’t think it is a coincedence that Paul immediately reminds us of the tent maker preacher example that he set. Earlier in 1 Cor 9;15 Paul declares that he would rather die than accept pay for preaching!
Pure lives result from being filled with Christ
Phi 1;9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. 11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ —for this will bring much glory and praise to God. …
Preachers with selfish ambition are not pure or sincere
15 It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. 16 They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News. 17 Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me. 18 But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.
Keep us from denying you by the way we live. Give us pure hearts and protect us from the devil and his hired hands, from preachers that deny you by the way they live. We trust in the power of Christ to make us pure and holy, as we live in him, as he frees us from sin, In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
