How Do We Receive God’s Love
God’s word promises his unfailing love to all who love him and obey his commands[New Testament Commands], and to all who walk before him in wholehearted devotion. Lets take a quick look at these passages.
NLT Deu 7;9 Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. 10 But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject him.
Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication
NLT 1 King 8;22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the entire community of Israel. He lifted his hands toward heaven, 23 and he prayed, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.
NLT Dan 9;4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: “O Lord, you are a great and awesome God ! You always fulfill your covenant and keep your promises of unfailing love to those who love you and obey your commands. 5 But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations. 6 We have refused to listen to your servants the prophets, who spoke on your authority to our kings and princes and ancestors and to all the people of the land.
Those who love God, obey his commands, walk before him in wholehearted devotion, and do what is right are promised God’s unfailing love.
NLT Rom 5;3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love . 6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.
The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with God’s love. So we need to respond to the Holy Spirit, to trust in his power, to fellowship with him, to rest in him so that we can receive God’s love.
Growing Down Into The God’s Love
NIV Eph 3;16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God ‘s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God
As we let the Spirit work in us, Christ makes his home in our hearts, and our faith grows down into the vastness of God’s love for us, then we can fully appreciate the awesome gift of Christ’s sacrifice.
Freedom from Rules and New Life in Christ
NLT Col 2;6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. 8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
As we continue to follow Christ, our roots grow down into him, our faith grows, and we are filled with truth and overflow with thankfulness.
NIV Eph 5;1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God ‘s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
As we imitate Christ, we live the life of love and sacrifice and thankfulness – all without a hint of immorality, impurity or greed. God is spirit and he is Holy. If we are to continue in fellowship with God, we must also remain Holy. We are not permitted to have even a hint of sexual immorality, any kind of impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk or even coarse joking.
NLT 1 John 4;7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God . 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
We need to love others, not with a worldly kind of love, but with a Godly sacrificial kind of love. The kind of love that Jesus exampled for us.
1 John 5;2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 This is love for God : to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God . 6 This is the one who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept man’s testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Our natural response when we receive this love from God is a God breathed desire to obey his commands. As our faith grows we naturally desire to and are empowered to obey these commands. If we starve off our faith we find our ability to keep the commands can drop off. We are to keep: Living in the Light – Seeking And Following the Holy Spirit
Jam 1;12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
As we fellowship with the Holy Spirit we receive God’s love, better appreciate Jesus’ sacrifice, and respond in obedience, growing our love for God. Then when we are faced with trials, we can persevere, and hold on to our faith in and our love for God.
May God Help Us All To Embrace His Transforming Love, to keep his commands and to walk with him in wholehearted devotion!
