Two Types Of Wisdom

There are 2 very different types of wisdom. Worldly wisdom is wisdom rooted in men’s thoughts and actions. Godly wisdom is wisdom is very different. It comes from the creator, from his word, his Spirit, and his Son. The Bible describes this as ‘wisdom from above’. Here are its characteristics.

NLT Jam 3;14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom . Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

We are told specifics about Godly wisdom. It is;

pure,

peace loving,

gentle,

willing to yield to others,

full of mercy and good deeds,

shows no favoritism and

is always sincere.

-Never jealous or ambitious

Lets look at other passages on Wisdom

NLT 1 Cor 3;19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” 20 And again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.” 21 So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you— 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world , or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

NLT 2 Cor 1;12 We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom . That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world , and especially toward you. 13 Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us, 14 even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesus returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.

NLT Tit 2;12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom , righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. 14 He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

NLT Dan 2;19 That night the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven. 20 He said, “Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. 21 He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. 22 He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light. 23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given me wisdom and strength. You have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded.”

NLT 1 Cor 1;20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world ‘s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. 21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom , he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom . 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense. 24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength. 26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world ‘s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world , things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. 30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.”

This verse hints that the three issues are related, staying clean [purity], staying holy, and being wise. This verse is says he is wisdom, and he makes us both pure and holy.

Summary Excerpts from above passages:

Godly wisdom is:

pure,

peace loving,

gentle,

willing to yield to others,

full of mercy and good deeds, shows no favoritism and is always sincere.

-Never jealous or ambitious

Worldly Wisdom is;

tainted with jealousy & self-ambition (evil),

not helpful to know God

useless foolishness to God

thrown out by God

a trap for men who think they are wise

So that none can boast in God’s Presence:

God uses things the world considers foolish to shame [those who think they are] wise.

God uses the powerless to to shame the powerful.

God uses things despised by the world , things counted useless to humble what the world considers important.

Our Assignment:

We should live in this evil world with Christ’s wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, never relying on human wisdom, never relying on a particular leader, just depending on God’s grace, remembering that Christ gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

May God Fill Us With The Wisdom From Above And Help Us To Depend Fully On Him,

Glenn

I wholeheartedly say amen to your post! God has been putting this same matter on our (my wife and I) hearts lately, and we’ve been posting a little on it too, although you definately humbled be by the way in which you let the scripture do the talking. I must admit I all too often think my own words are somehow better… I look forward to going back and reading through previous posts, and being edified by someone who is seeking to live out a Christ-centered life, not just chase fads or throw around buzz words. Thanks for the encouragement.
In Christ, Daniel
