Let’s start off with the Message Translation of Ps 37;34-40
34 Wait passionately for God, don’t leave the path. He’ll give you your place in the sun while you watch the wicked lose it. 35 I saw Wicked bloated like a toad, croaking pretentious nonsense. 36 The next time I looked there was nothing- a punctured bladder, vapid and limp. 37 Keep your eye on the healthy soul, scrutinize the straight life; There’s a future in strenuous wholeness. 38 But the willful will soon be discarded; insolent souls are on a dead-end street. 39 The spacious, free life is from God, it’s also protected and safe. 40 God-strengthened, we’re delivered from evil- when we run to him, he saves us.
We are told to avoid wickedness, seek the straight life, run to God and he will save us. He will not only save us he even puts a smile of our face.
MSG Ps 42;5 Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God- soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God. 6 When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse everything I know of you, From Jordan depths to Hermon heights, including Mount Mizar. 7 Chaos calls to chaos, to the tune of whitewater rapids. Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers crash and crush me. 8 Then God promises to love me all day, sing songs all through the night! My life is God’s prayer…11 Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul ? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God- soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.
When we fix our eyes on God- soon we’ll be praising and smiling.
MSG Pro 4;20 Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice. 21 Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart! 22 Those who discover these words live, really live; body and soul , they’re bursting with health. 23 Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts.
When we listen well to God’s words and tune our ears to his voice and keep a vigilant watch over our hearts we will really live, “bursting with life and health!
MSG Pro 8;34 Blessed the man, blessed the woman, who listens to me, awake and ready for me each morning, alert and responsive as I start my day’s work. 35 When you find me, you find life, real life, to say nothing of God’s good pleasure. 36 But if you wrong me, you damage your very soul ; when you reject me, you’re flirting with death.”
Listening and responding to God bring blessings, but wronging him damages our souls
MSG Prov 10;3 God won’t starve an honest soul , but he frustrates the appetites of the wicked. 4 Sloth makes you poor; diligence brings wealth. 5 Make hay while the sun shines-that’s smart; go fishing during harvest-that’s stupid. 6 Blessings accrue on a good and honest life, but the mouth of the wicked is a dark cave of abuse. 7 A good and honest life is a blessed memorial; a wicked life leaves a rotten stench.
Diligence brings wealth; Sloth makes you poor.
MSG Pro 13;19 Souls who follow their hearts thrive; fools bent on evil despise matters of soul .
Souls who follow their hearts thrive; fools despise matters of soul
MSG Pro 27;9 Just as lotions and fragrance give sensual delight, a sweet friendship refreshes the soul.
Sweet friendships refresh the soul.
MSG Hab 2;4 “Look at that man, bloated by self-importance- full of himself but soul-empty. But the person in right standing before God through loyal and steady believing is fully alive, really alive.
Life comes from right standing with God thru loyal and steady believing but self importance leads to an empty soul
MSG Hab 2;9-11 “Who do you think you are- recklessly grabbing and looting, Living it up, acting like king of the mountain, acting above it all, above trials and troubles? 10 You’ve engineered the ruin of your own house. In ruining others you’ve ruined yourself. You’ve undermined your foundations, rotted out your own soul . 11 The bricks of your house will speak up and accuse you. The woodwork will step forward with evidence.
When we live it up, recklessly grabbing and looting we ruin our house and our souls.
MSG 1 Thess 5;16 Be cheerful no matter what; 17 pray all the time; 18 thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. 19 Don’t suppress the Spirit, 20 and don’t stifle those who have a word from the Master. 21 On the other hand, don’t be gullible. Check out everything, and keep only what’s good. 22 Throw out anything tainted with evil. 23 May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together-spirit, soul , and body-and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. 24 The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!
Trust God to put you together and make you holy
MSG 2 Tim 2;15 Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple. 16 Stay clear of pious talk that is only talk. Words are not mere words, you know. If they’re not backed by a godly life, 17 they accumulate as poison in the soul . Hymenaeus and Philetus are examples,
Pious talk without a sincere Godly walk accumulates as poison in our souls .
MSG 1 Peter2;11 Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul .
When we make this world our home, we indulge our ego at the expense of our souls.
